Biography
David Blackburn/ DB ArtWood |
David,
resides in the city of San Buenaventura, CA. He has enjoyed
a career in the residential and commercial building industry
for well over twenty years. Since his youth David has enjoyed
working with his hands, including wood carving, competitive
model car building, and custom wood auto dashboard and gun stalk
creations. David was inspired to create fine boxes when the
demand for cigar humidors became popular a few of years ago.
His love of wood prompted him to incorporate a wide variety
and combination of rare and beautiful woods, with an emphasis
on solid burls. He creates truly unique boxes...each one-of-a-kind
original work of art that can take as much as sixty or more
hours to finish.
These museum quality boxes are avalible as humidors, jewlery
and gift boxes, gun cases, or any other custom application.
David's boxes and other wood creations have been shown in street
fairs and art walks, but now are currently displayed at Aquarius
Gallery in Cambria, CA., Pacific Dreams in the Ventura Marina
Village and Northwind Studios also in Ventura. He has expanded
his craft in free form sculpting, burl wood bowl carving and
has plans to incorporate his unique style of burl wood presentation
into assorted furniture pieces. |

Artist's Perspective - Design Approach and Concepts
Anyone
who has studied wood and the beautiful objects made from it
for thousands of years has appreciated it's diverse color,
grain patterns and textures. Many woods are like rough stones,
which when cut open and polished, reveal incredible complexity
and beauty. While not discounting the high revered art of
traditional veneering techniques, the emphasize is on the
thicker soild burls by presentation with elevations, compound
curves, recesses, veining and contrasts between individual
pieces. This process begins by finding, cutting, curing, then
slabbling or slicing sections out of tree trunks or yet un-milled
burls. Pieces are then carfully selected and fitted into a
pattern with contrasting or complementary trims, esspecially
on box tops or interiors. Box sides are fitted with select
well known hardwoods or rare and exotic woods with attention
to grain matches. |
